Wildfruit Folkmusic: MUSIC NEWS - UPDATES

FOLK MUSIC EVENTS/ART ON THE KINNI - August 27, 2008

POP WAGNER & DAKOTA DAVE HULL!
FRIDAY AUG. 29, 7 pm, free
Music in the Park series - downtown River Falls - Pop Wagner and Dakota Dave Hull -
This is the last show for the Music in the Park season, and it should be a great one. Dakota Dave Hull is considered one of America's most eminent guitarists. Pop Wagner is a great guitarist, singer, songwriter, and humorist, and both men have been huge influences in the Midwestern old time music scene. I cannot recommend this show highly enough, and I also very highly recommend Wagner and Hull's latest cd release, "Airship." CD's for sale through CDBaby, or onstage during break and after the show. (Last week's "rain" location was Kinni Lounge - perhaps that's their regular plan B.)

Where do songs come from? - July 22, 2008

I have concluded that for me, it's not about being hit by inspiration, though that helps, and it's not about just being disciplined, though that helps. I have learned that if I am growing in life, learning, thinking for myself, using my mind and expanding, there are songs that come to me about those things.

So I guess this is all an offshoot of getting comfortable in my own skin: learning about my roots, healing from things, facing off my demons one by one, expanding my roles in life, adopting new ways, and becoming a more useful person to others and to God.

No wonder it's therapeutic! I should pay the listeners more to listen! But I really try to keep things not personal, but universal, when I write. It may be inspired by a personal event, but I want others to feel heard when they hear my song.

The last step is to turn off my internal editor, who wants to correct and throw away every delicate new little idea. I have to give myself permission to write the song, and decide to physically go grab the guitar and the notepad and make it come into being.

I should have some really happy ritual celebration when each song is done, like jumping in the river or getting my hair done!

Pop Wagner Summer Schedule - July 18, 2008

Seeing the imcomparably smooth cowboy swing of Emily Huppert and Tim Caswell tonight at the River Falls' Veteran's Park, reminded me of how much I am a fan of cowboy performer Pop Wagner. Pop is also coming to River Falls this summer.

Emily Huppert & Tim Caswell can also be seen at Vino in the Valley, and bring some cash to buy their cds! I bought two tonight and can't wait to listen!

Here is Pop Wagner's summer schedule link. If you are visiting the Big Top Chautauqua Celebration of the Song this Labor Day weekend at Bayfield, make time for a side trip to Pop's Ashland show.

Also thinking all things South Shore, Cafe Accordion Orchestra with Brian Barnes is playing this August at Stage North in Washburn, as well as at the MN State Fair. July 19, I believe, is their cd release party for "Germaine" at the Eagle's Club in St. Paul.

The Damn Stuff - July 15, 2008

Let us pray today, not for cheap gas, the damn stuff, but for a good alternative to the damn stuff. They've cheated us long enough; it's time to just walk away from the damn stuff!

Went to the Polka Fest in Ellsworth this weekend and there, saw a little car that someone had made. It was in the design of an early open-sided, buggy-like auto. It had bike tires and a teensy tiny engine. Clearly these folks were having fun with alternative energy! Now that's the right stuff!

I plan to have fun with it, too, Sept. 20, at the RE-Fest in Austin, MN. See you there!

Plastic - July 15, 2008

Encountered a #7 plastic drinking cup last night - wow - the eco-friendly compostable cup! It's hard for me to fathom putting a plastic cup into the compost pile, but, here goes!!! Clink! There it lies! Guess I'll put some straw over it to keep it from blowing away. Now, are plastic cups "greens" or "browns" in the chem lab that is my compost pile? Master Gardeners? Anyone?

The other plastic dealie I am thinking about is the humble 5 gallon bucket. My issue of Backyard Poultry features a pattern for making a nest box out of 5 gallon pails.

Reminds me that last year I saw a plastic-capped shed at Franconia Sculpture Park. The walls were made of realtor signs, and the roof was made of 5 gallon buckets, split the long way in half, then snugged together in overlapping vertical rows. It made a roof that I assume is major waterproof, and it also had the added benefit of transmitting lots of soft white light. Great shed!

Reduce, reuse, recycle. What blessedly stingy use of our resources can you come up with today?

Responsibility - July 15, 2008

My Grandma's pet peeve - people should take more personal responsiblity. She'd be lovin' Obama right now!

I heard briefly on tv the other day that Americans waste about 6 million slices of bread or something like that, each day (don't quote me!) Anyway it was some huge amount.

Imagine the labor time, water and energy use that goes into those wasted slices.

Imagine the progress, sustainably speaking, that we would make, if we just quit wasting stuff.

Conserving our resources, waste not want not, share our stuff, help others, use what we have wisely, do without,...one way or the other, we may just have to grow up someday!

A pox on those who want to keep spoon-feeding us; oil, frankenfood, excessive consumption, politically expedient beliefs, trifles that stand for "news."

Let us leave those childish things behind!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
